UNDERSTANDING LABELS IN ACTION
Understanding Expiration Dates:
"Best By" = peak freshness (may still be safe after). "Sell By" = retail guidance (usually safe after if stored at home). "Use By" = safety guidance (follow closely for perishables).
The Top 9 Major Allergens (Required Labeling):
Milk, Eggs, Fish, Crustacean Shellfish, Tree Nuts, Peanuts, Wheat, Sesame, Soy. Check the ingredient list and "Contains:" statement.
Food Recalls:
Match product name, code, and date range to your package. Check FDA.gov/Recalls or USDA FSIS Recalls. Don't consume recalled products even if you haven't gotten sick.
Reading Ingredient Lists:
Ingredients listed by weight, highest to lowest. First 3-5 = bulk of product. This is the most honest part of the label.
GMO Labeling:
Federal law does NOT require GMO labeling. Look for "Non-GMO Project Verified" seal or USDA Organic seal for verification. Common GMO crops: corn, soybeans, canola, sugar beets.
"May Contain" Allergen Warnings
Optional warnings not required by law. Absence doesn't guarantee zero cross-contamination. For severe allergies, contact manufacturers about their plant practices.
