The Five Steps to Certification

The five basic steps: adopt organic practices, select a USDA-accredited certifying agent, submit your application, receive an on-site inspection, and the agent issues your certificate.

Any land used for organic crops must have had no prohibited substances applied for the past three years, and until that 36-month transition is met, you may not sell, label, or represent the product as organic. Know the clock before you start.
Cost-Share Help & Finding a Certifier

What Inspectors Check (Staying Certified)
Every certified operation is inspected to verify compliance, and the inspector audits records, material applications, sales, harvest, and yield. Note: the inspector can explain the regulations but cannot advise you on how to farm or how to overcome barriers to certification, that independence is by design.
