First Time Grant Applicants: Essential Setup & Registration
Register to Do Business with Federal Government:
Sam.gov (System for Award Management)
Before applying for federal grants, you must register your business on SAM.gov. This is the federal database of vendors and contractors eligible to receive federal funding. Registration is free and required by law. Update your registration annually.
Find & Apply for Federal Grants
Grants.gov is the single point of entry for all federal grant opportunities across agencies. Search by funding type, deadline, and eligibility. Create an account, submit applications, and track status. Not all grants are listed here—check agency websites directly too.
Get Your Business EIN (Employer Identification Number):
An EIN is a unique 9-digit number for your business required by the IRS. You need one before applying for most grants, opening a business bank account, or hiring employees. Apply free online at IRS.gov (immediate approval) or by mail/phone. Sole proprietors can use their SSN but an EIN separates personal and business finances.
Register Your Business with the State:
Before applying for state or federal grants, register your business (LLC, corporation, partnership) with Arkansas. File Articles of Organization or Incorporation, pay filing fees, and obtain an EIN. Check with your county for additional local registration requirements.
Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development
USDA NIFA (National Institute of Food and Agriculture):
The Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program funds organizations providing training, education, outreach, and technical assistance to beginning farmers. Eligible applicants form collaborative networks (not individuals). Organizations deliver farm business planning, financial management, and operational readiness training. Applications due June 16, 2026.
USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA):
FSA provides direct and guaranteed farm ownership and operating loans to family-size farmers and ranchers who cannot obtain commercial credit elsewhere. Loans cover land purchase, equipment, livestock, feed, seed, supplies, and farm improvements. Beginning farmers receive priority funding and favorable down payment terms.
VAPG (Value-Added Producer Grants)
VAPG competitive grants support agricultural producers developing value-added products and services including processing, direct marketing, and expanding market opportunities. Planning grants award up to $50,000; working capital grants up to $200,000. Requires a 1:1 matching contribution (cash or in-kind).
LFPP (Local Food Promotion Program)
USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS):
LFPP supports intermediary organizations, farmers' markets, and producer networks expanding local food systems infrastructure. Projects include aggregation, distribution, cold storage, farmers' market development, and producer training. Planning grants range $25,000-$100,000; implementation grants $100,000-$500,000. Requires 25% cost share.
SBA's Grocery Guarantee program (effective May 2026) provides guaranteed loans up to $5 million for agricultural production and food supply chain businesses at 90% federal backing. Standard SBA 7(a) loans support equipment, working capital, and real estate. Lower equity requirements make loans accessible to beginning farmers and limited-resource producers.
NRCS (Natural Resource Conservation Service) EQIP (Environmental Quality Incentives Program)
EQIP provides cost-share payments covering up to 75% of conservation practice costs for soil health, irrigation efficiency, wildlife habitat, and pollinator plantings. Beginning farmers and historically underserved producers may qualify for up to 90% cost-share. Applications accepted continuously; contact your local NRCS office for state-specific ranking deadlines.
Arkansas Specialty Crop and Local Food Support
Arkansas Department of Agriculture:
Arkansas supports specialty crop growers and local food producers through competitively awarded grants. The Specialty Crop Block Grant Program (applications accepted through May 8, 2026) funds projects strengthening the specialty crop industry through marketing, education, research, and crop development. Eligible applicants include producers, universities, cooperatives, and community-based organizations.
National Agricultural Law Center · University of Arkansas:
Succession planning transfers knowledge, skills, value, and control across generations. The National Agricultural Law Center provides free resources on legal structures, tax strategies, trusts, and special use valuation. UA Extension offers regional guidance and workshops across all 75 Arkansas counties on communication frameworks and family farm transitions.
